Position Overview:

We seek a detail-oriented and organized individual to join our team as an Evidence Technician, sometimes called an evidence specialist or property and evidence custodian. The primary responsibility of this vital role is to manage, preserve, and maintain the integrity of digital evidence throughout the chain of custody process during litigation. The successful candidate will be critical in ensuring all evidence is properly collected, stored, and documented, following legal and industry standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Receive, document, and catalog digital evidence received from clients, law firms, private investigators, law enforcement agencies, and other sources.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of evidence and lab notes documenting all actions taken during the evidence intake, examination, and production processes.
  • Safely store and secure digital devices and associated evidence following established protocols and chain of custody procedures.
  • Oversee the backing up and preservation of data.
  • Implement and enforce device retention policies, ensuring that evidence is retained for the appropriate duration.
  • Coordinate the return of digital devices to their rightful owners or disposition upon the conclusion of forensic examinations or legal proceedings.
  • Perform routine maintenance, upgrades, and validation of forensic equipment and tools to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Assist forensic examiners in retrieving and preparing evidence for analysis.
  • Coordinate with internal teams and external partners to track the status and location of evidence throughout the examination process.
  • Prepare evidence for legal proceedings, including packaging, labeling, and documentation.

Requirements:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, or a related field.
  • Prior experience in evidence management, digital forensics, or law enforcement is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements governing evidence handling and chain of custody procedures.
  • Proficiency in documenting procedures, lab notes, and evidence records.
  • Meticulous attention to detail for accurate record keeping.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with digital forensic tools and software used in digital evidence examinations is a plus.

Certifications:

While not required, the following certifications would be beneficial for success in this role:

  • You can earn a certified Property and Evidence Specialist (CPES) certification through the International Association for Property and Evidence, Inc. (IAPE).
  • You can also earn an Evidence Management Certification from the Evidence Management Institute (EMI).

Skills:

  • Proficient in device documentation and maintaining comprehensive lab notes to ensure accuracy and traceability throughout the evidence handling process.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office and Google Workspace applications for data entry and documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage evidence and comply with established policies and procedures securely.
  • Familiarity with lab safety protocols and practices to ensure a secure working environment for handling sensitive digital devices.
  • Understanding of device retention policies and procedures to manage evidence retention periods and facilitate timely returns to owners or disposition.
